During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an bold beginning to his tenure.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may be challenging to secure. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly productive.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
